Unsweetened Spicy Stove top apple sauce

5 Oct

This applesauce recipe is simple and incredibly delicious. I love it warm, but it is also great chilled. One jar of this was enough motivation to order some mason jars and make enough applesauce with all the apples from our tree to last us through the year.

4 large apples (any variety will work)

1 cup water
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
pinch of salt
juice of half a lemon

Core the apples and chop them coarsely. Place in a saucepan with half the spices the water and bring to a boil covered. Let simmer for 30-50 minutes, stirring occasionally. When the apples are stewed and delicious mash them with a wooden spoon. Add lemon juice and the rest of the spices. Before you mash check to make sure there isn’t too much liquid, if there is, pour it out into a cup– apple cider!
